Indonesia, Norway FMs Meet in New York to Discuss Peacebuilding Partnership
Jakarta. Indonesia and Norway on Monday (18/09) co-hosted a ministerial meeting which discussed financing of peacebuilding efforts through the South-South and triangular partnership on the sidelines of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The South-South and triangular partnership refers to a model of expertise exchange and support in knowledge, technical assistance and investments between different actors – governments, organizations and individuals – among developing countries.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi stressed the importance of increasing funding for peacebuilding efforts in post-conflict countries and said developed countries must meet their funding commitments. She also highlighted the necessity to attract the private sector to finance peacebuilding efforts.
"Achieving peace is a difficult task, it’s even more difficult to preserve it. Our biggest challenge is to ensure quick and adequate funding to support development in post-conflict countries," Retno said, as quoted in a statement issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Retno added that a "creative and innovative global cooperation" is necessary to bring the required funding into this cause.
Norway’s Foreign Minister Børge Brende said there is "great potential for peacebuilding and South-South and triangular collaboration" and emphasized the need "to assist countries when they are moving from conflict to peace," according to Norway’s Mission to the UN in New York.
The meeting, led by Retno and her Norwegian counterpart Brende, also identified the types of support required by post-conflict countries and those that donor countries are ready to offer.
According to Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Ministry, Indonesia provided capacity-building support for more than 40 people from different countries in 2016. The Southeast Asian nation has also conducted capacity-building programs for more than 30 countries through the triangular cooperation since 2011.
In 2018, the Indonesian government plans to launch assistance programs for dozens of new countries and seeks to make more partnerships with countries in Africa through the Indonesia-Africa forum, which will be held in April next year.
