Jakarta. Indonesia's top-seeded badminton men's doubles pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo disappointed fans after losing in the first round of the 2017 Indonesia Open on Wednesday (14/06).

The 2017 All England winners were outclassed by Danish pair Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, losing 21-16, 21-16.

The Indonesian pair, who were widely expected to reach the final stages of the tournament, blamed injuries and a windy court for their loss.

"My shoulder is injured, and each time I smashed the birdie, I felt pain, but it shouldn't have cost us a win," Kevin said after the match.

"Doctors couldn't tell me when I would recover [...] only to maintain my health and take medicine to relieve the pain."

Marcus, on the other hand, blamed the team's loss in part due to a strong breeze during the match.

"The court was very windy, but I can't completely blame that as it affected our opponents as well," he said. "In that situation, we shouldn't have placed so many high balls [...] we should have played more defensively."

In a separate match in the tournament, Indonesian men's single competitor Anthony Sinisuka Ginting was also knocked out by India's Pramnoy Haseena Sunil in a straight set, losing 21-13, 21-18.

Additionally, former top-class competitor Tommy Sugiarto was stopped by Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei, losing 13-21, 21-10, 21-18 in a rubber set.

Spanish superstar Carolina Marin and Indonesia's sixth-ranked mixed pair Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto were also eliminated in the tournament's first round.
