Indonesia Passes 10,000 Coronavirus Cases in a Day, Sets Record for Third Straight Day

Jakarta. The daily count of coronavirus cases in Indonesia passed the 10,000 mark on Friday, setting a new record for the highest number of cases for the third day in a row, Health Ministry figures show.

It’s for the first time that the daily number of coronavirus has hit five digits in a single day.

The record-breaking figures bring the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases to 808,340, of which 117,704 or 14.6 percent are active cases.

A further 233 coronavirus-related deaths have been recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 23,753.

The government has imposed a rule obliging travelers to provide negative Covid-19 test result within three days at the latest before the date of departure when leaving for other provinces on any means of transportation. The rule comes into effect from Saturday until January 25.

Three major hotspots in the most crowded island of Java saw a new high, with Jakarta leading the group by recording just below 3,000 cases.

The capital city has passed 200,000 cases overall, more than the figures in West and East Java combined.

West Java added 1,824 cases -- beating the previous one-day high reported in the province more than a month ago -- for a total of 94,371.

In another sad milestone, East Java recorded 1,025 cases, the first time since the outbreak that its daily count hit four digits, to take its tally to 90,615.

Central Java is the last province to top 1,000 cases in the day, taking its total to 89,637.

The country’s four most populous provinces make up 60 percent of the overall coronavirus cases nationwide.

The virus is not slowing down in South Sulawesi, which has the most coronavirus cases outside Java. It has been averaging 538 cases since Jan. 1 and now has a total of 35,348 cases.

East Kalimantan sets a new record for highest daily number for the second day in a row, with another 512 cases to take its total to 29,724.

The resort island of Bali rejoined the group of ten worst-affected provinces after adding 231 new cases -- a new local high -- for a total of 18,847.

Emerging hotspot Yogyakarta is the next province to break own record with an additional 379 cases, bringing the total number of cases to 14,346. To put into perspective, the province in southern Java had a total of just 7,223 cases a month ago.

The surge continues in Banten where an average of 225 new cases has been reported since the start of the month.

Death Toll
East Java remains the deadliest place in the Indonesian outbreak with a total of 6,314 Covid-19 deaths, 72 more from the previous day,

Central Java has recorded 57 deaths in the 24-hour period to bring the total death toll to nearly 4,000.

Jakarta is ranked third with a total of 3,427 deaths, an increase of 24 on the figure a day earlier. West Java comes next with a total of 1,205 deaths.
