Indonesia Passes 25,000 Covid-19 Cases in a Day

Jakarta. Indonesia again saw a new high in daily numbers of Covid-19 cases and deaths on Friday, with 25,830 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours to take its tally to 2.23 million.

It’s for the first time that daily numbers passed the 25,000 mark since the outbreak began.

According to Health Ministry data, a record 539 Covid-19 patients have died in the 24-hour period, bringing the total death toll to 59,534. It came only a day after the daily death toll passed the 500 mark for the first time.

Jakarta added 9,399 cases, also the capital city’s new high, to take its total to 560,408, including 8,476 deaths.

Jakarta and five other provinces in the most crowded island of Java account for 68 percent of overall cases countrywide.

Covid-19 death toll is particularly high in East and Central Java, where more than 23,000 people have died from the contagious disease.

Central Java reported 220 deaths on Friday for a total of 10,968 while East Java reported 82 deaths to take its overall fatality toll to 12,747.

Starting midnight, Jakarta will close provincial borders to implement Covid-19 lockdown that according to the central government applies until July 20.

“All gateways to and from Jakarta will be closed from 00:00 accompanied by strict monitoring measures in conjunction with the implementation of the emergency social restrictions effective tomorrow,” Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Fadil Imran said on Friday.

“People mobility is limited to essential activities, apart from that traveling is banned. The hospital bed occupancy ratio is already above 90 percent and this is very alarming that we need to take actions,” he added.
