Jakarta. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Indonesia hit the 300,000 mark on Sunday after Jakarta reported a new high in daily total.

The country has recorded nearly 4,000 new cases in the last 24 hours to take its total to 303,498, including 11,151 deaths.

Only 23 countries in the world have passed the grim milestone and Indonesia overtook Germany in 22nd place in the number of cases. Indonesia’s Covid-19 caseload is second only to the Philippines in Southeast Asia, but it has the highest death toll in the region.

Jakarta reported the highest single-day rise with 1,389 cases of the virus, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 78,850, more than any other provinces. The capital city has the second-highest number of Covid-19 deaths, totaling 1,755 as of Sunday.

The surge is slowing in East Java but it still has the second-biggest caseloads with a total of 44,898 cases and tops the national death toll with 3,280 Covid-19 deaths.

Faster growth of cases in West Java means that the country’s most populous province is now in the third place of provinces with the most cases. It has a total of 23,899 cases, including 480 deaths.

West Java has overtaken Central Java (23,764 cases) since Thursday, but its neighbor has three times the number of Covid-19 deaths, totaling 1,444.

South Sulawesi (15,883) is the only province outside Java Island in the top five. Its daily numbers have been reduced to two digits in the last three days.

North Sumatra came next with 10,424 cases after outnumbering South Kalimantan last week. The latter is the only province in the top ten which has seen a significant drop in newly cases since early last month, totaling 10,618 on Sunday.

On the other hand, neighboring East Kalimantan has been experiencing a dramatic surge in cases since late August. It has a total of 9,446 cases -- more than double the number on August 31 -- and overtakes Bali (9,365) in the eighth place.

Riau and West Sumatra have been experiencing the most dramatic surge in new cases since late August. The number of cases have quadrupled in Riau and been thrice in West Sumatra than their figures on August 31.

Indonesia has a total of 63,894 active cases of the virus, or 21.1 percent of total cases. More than 228,000 Covid-19 patients have been cured or discharged.
