Jakarta. New confirmed cases of coronavirus infections in Indonesia rose by 533 on Saturday, the highest single day rise since the outbreak began in early March, to take the country’s total to 13,645 cases.

This is the first time daily cases surpass the 500 mark.

The total cases include 959 deaths and 2,607 patients who have recovered from the disease, according to report from the National Covid-19 Task Force.

Saturday’s figure was attributable to a sudden increase in East Java, which saw 135 new cases since Friday and outnumbered those of Jakarta, the current epicenter of the Indonesian outbreak.

East Java now has 1,419 cases, just 18 cases below the total number in West Java, the second most affected province. East Java also saw the second highest fatality number with 141 deaths.

Jakarta remains the hardest hit by the coronavirus outbreak with 5,056 cases, 101 more from a day earlier, with a total of 427 deaths.

The record-breaking daily cases may also be related to the significant increase in mass testing. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based testing has been conducted on around 5,000 people since Friday.
