Indonesia Sends $2 Million Aid to Papua New Guinea, Afghanistan
Jakarta. Indonesia sent Monday humanitarian assistance worth a total of Rp 35.5 billion (around $2 million) to the landslide-struck Papua New Guinea as well as Afghanistan which got hit by an earthquake and flash floods.
The humanitarian assistance that went to Papua New Guinea was worth Rp 18 billion, comprising medicines, hygiene kits, food, among others. The Afghanistan-bound aid was worth Rp 17.5 billion.
“Papua New Guinea is our close neighbor. We have to help when disaster strikes. The same goes for Afghanistan,” Jokowi said when sending off the humanitarian assistance from Jakarta.
Chief Cultural Affairs Minister Muhadjir Effendy earlier said that Indonesia had already coordinated with the Papua New Guinean government on what sort of assistance they need. UN estimates said that over 670 people were feared dead in the Papua New Guinea landslide. The government said that the disaster had displaced 1,250 people. Last October, Afghanistan got hit by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake. Unprecedented heavy rainfall also caused flash floods in Afghanistan earlier this year.
