Indonesia to Deploy Thousands of Police Personnel to Guard ASEAN Summit

Jakarta. The police will deploy 2,627 personnel to guard the upcoming 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, which will have Southeast Asian leaders in attendance.
Some 947 personnel are officers from the National Police Headquarters. The East Nusa Tenggara police have assigned 1,660 personnel to guard the high-profile event. The remaining 20 personnel are members of the West Nusa Tenggara police.
"All personnel are equipped with body-worn cameras," the State Secretariat Ministry said on Thursday.
The police will also install both static and mobile CCTV cameras —also equipped with face recognition— at the airport, places where the delegates and the leaders are staying, as well as the summit's venues.
On May 10-11, Labuan Bajo will host 8 ASEAN-related meetings. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will lead 7 of those meetings, while Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will chair the BIMP-EAGA talks. The BIMP-EAGA is a sub-regional initiative that focuses on the less developed areas in Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
Indonesia is this year's chair of the Southeast Asian bloc and has adopted "ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth" for its chairmanship’s theme.
