Jakarta. Indonesia's under-22 national football team tied Thailand 1-1 in the opening match of group stages at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games at the Shah Alam Stadium in Selangor, Malaysia, on Tuesday (15/08).

Thailand struck the first goal in the 14th minute of the match as Chaiyawat Buran capitalized on an error made by Indonesian goalie Kurniawan Kartika Ajie, who failed to anticipate a long-pass cross.

Indonesian coach Luis Milla Aspas opted to field natural wing-back Ricky Fajrin as center-back, alongside captain Hansamu Yama Pranata in front of Kartika Ajie after Arema FC's stopper Bagas Adi Nugroho got injured and was not included in the squad at the last minute.

"Bagas's injury was a blow for us but I think Fajrin can play at two positions. He has a clean tackle," Milla said in a statement.

Indonesia's side finally managed to equalize in the 61st minute as wing-forward Osvaldo Haay was brought down in the box by center-back Worawut Namvech.

Penalty taker Septian David Maulana caught the net after delivering a powerful shot to the left, as Thai keeper Nont Muangngam guessed wrong.

Goalie Kartika Ajie made a flying save to fend off a long shot by Thai midfielder Phitiwat Sookjitthammakul  in the 79th minute to keep the score level.

Indonesia had two clear chances in the 90th minute after Papuan striker Marinus Wanewar sent a header over the bar, which was followed seconds later as playmaker Evan Dimas almost caught the back net.

"We know that Thailand is a tough opponent, so after scoring, we were tired and let them possess the ball," Milla said after the game.

"Thailand is a strong team and is very much favored at this tournament. This draw has motivated us."

Indonesia and Thailand share one point each in Group B at the SEA Games. Vietnam, who crushed Timor Leste with a 4-0 win, and the Philippines are group leaders.

Indonesia will play its second match against the Philippines on Thursday, the country's day of independence.
