Indonesia Urges Olympic Council of Asia to Promote 2018 Asian Games

OCTOBER 16, 2017

Jakarta. The government has urged the Olympic Council of Asia, or OCA, to promote globally the Indonesia-hosted Asian Games 2018, a minister said on Monday (16/10).

"We want the president of OCA to promote the 2018 Asian Games globally, as he often travels worldwide," Coordinating Human Development and Cultural Affairs Minister Puan Maharani said, as quoted by state news agency Antara.

Puan said OCA president Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah hopes that Indonesia will perform better in the upcoming Asian Games than it did in 1962.

She added that OCA is also optimistic about the role of Indonesia as the host for the pan-continental multi-sport event held every four years.

Puan said President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Sunday discussed with OCA representatives the stage of preparations ahead of the games.

The 2018 Asian Games will be held from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2 in Jakarta and South Sumatra's Palembang.

Thousands of athletes from 54 countries are expected to participate in the event.

According to Puan, the games' organizing committee will need at least 13,000 volunteers.
