Indonesian Athletes Get $240 Daily Allowance for Rio Olympics

JULY 20, 2016

Jakarta. Indonesian athletes competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics will be given a $240 daily allowance during their stay in Brazil, according to team leader Raja Sapta Oktohari.

"Half of the allowance will be given before the athletes depart for Brazil, or after they arrive there. We will give the money in dollars," Raja said as quoted by Detiksport on Tuesday (19/07).

"The rest of the allowance will be given after they return home to Indonesia," Raja said.

The government is promising a lot of incentives for athletes competing at the Olympics next month. Previously, the Sports Minister also promised a Rp 20 million ($1,500) monthly allowance for life and a Rp 5 billion bonus for athletes who win a gold medal.

Meanwhile, Doddy Iswandi, secretary general of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, said the government has only come through with 70 percent of the promised Olympic budget.

"We've already spent some of the Rp 35 billion to pay for airfares for the weightlifters and badminton players who are now in a training camp in Sao Paulo," Doddy said.

Indonesia is sending 28 athletes to the Rio Olympics, 10 of them badminton players.
