Jakarta. An Indonesian man was arrested last weekend for possessing ammunition onboard a Jeddah-bound Royal Brunei Airlines flight, the foreign affairs minister said on Wednesday.

Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi told reporters that a 63-year-old man, who has been identified as Rustawi Tomo Kabul, was detained on Saturday after an X-ray inspection at Brunei International Airport uncovered bullets inside his luggage.

"The Indonesian embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan [in Brunei] continues to coordinate with the local authorities," Retno said.

Rustawi was flying to Saudi Arabia for umrah, or minor hajj pilgrimage, with 51 other people from Malang, East Java.

Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, the ministry's director for consular and legal affairs, said that Brunei's domestic intelligence agency Internal Security Department (ISD) had taken over the case, which is scheduled to go to trial next Monday.

Possession of unlicensed firearms carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison as well as caning under Brunei law.

"Ever since we received the notice, the Indonesian Embassy has provided aide and counsel [for him]," Lalu said.
