Indonesia's Coronavirus Cases Hit New High
Jakarta. Indonesia registered its highest single-day rise of coronavirus cases, 1,331 on Thursday, to take the country's total to 42,762. It beat the previous daily record of 1,241 cases on June 6.
The hike was in line with the country's increasing testing capacity, which for the first time surpassed the government's daily target of 20,000.
"We conducted 20,650 tests in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of testing to 580,522 to date," National Covid-19 Task Force spokesman Achmad Yurianto said in a video conference.
The total included 2,339 deaths, a jump by 63 from yesterday. The daily Covid-19 deaths were just below a record 64 on Monday.
The country also saw 555 more patients who have recovered from the disease to bring the number of total recoveries to 16,798.
East Java saw the biggest case increase in the day with 384, taking its total to 8,917. It's closing in on Jakarta that has 9,522 cases, 173 more from yesterday.
South Sulawesi recorded 166 more cases to bring the province's total to 3,366.
Combined cases from East Java, Jakarta and South Sulawesi make up 51 percent of the national tally.
South Kalimantan was another province to report a three-digit single-day rise on Thursday and now has a total of 2,326 Covid-19 cases.
The province of 4.3 million is now the sixth most-affected province by the outbreak in Indonesia, with only 65 cases fewer from Central Java, which has a population of 32.5 million.
With fewer number of recovered Covid-19 patients, South Kalimantan also has more active cases than Central Java.
A day earlier, Indonesia surpassed Singapore as the country with the most Covid-19 cases in Southeast Asia.
