Indonesia's Coronavirus Cases Set to Outnumber China's

Jakarta. Indonesia reported 1,462 new confirmed cases of coronavirus on Friday, bringing the total number of cases to 83,130. 
The latest figure is within the striking distance of China's 83,622 cases, which Indonesia is almost certain to pass tomorrow.

Indonesia has been averaging around 1,600 cases per day since the start of the month, while daily cases in China -- where the pandemic originated -- have rarely gone beyond the two-digit figure recently.


The death toll from the respiratory disease has increased by 84 in the last 24 hours, the second highest daily Covid-19 deaths since the outbreakin Indonesia, to a total of 3,957. 

But the number of recovered Covid-19 also surged by 1,489 to a total of to 41,834.

East Java reported the highest number of  cases and deaths in the 24-hour period, with 255 new cases and 37 fatalities.

It now has a total of 17,829 confirmed cases, including 1,338 deaths.

Jakarta added 253 new cases to 15,889 overall, with six more deaths to take its total death toll to 719.

Central Java, the new hotspot in the Indonesian outbreak, has 6,366 cases overall, 238 more from yesterday.

South Sulawesi remains in fourth place with 7,713 cases, but it reported fewer Covid-19 deaths than Central Java, 268 against 285.
