Indonesia's Coronavirus Cases Surpass 14,000

Jakarta. Indonesia reported 387 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infections on Sunday, a sharp drop from the new high of 533 a day earlier, but remains above the daily average of around 200 cases.
Southeast Asia’s biggest country now has a total of 14,032 cases, including 973 deaths and 2,698 patients who have recovered.
“There are 91 more patients recovering from the disease and 14 fatalities over the last 24 hours,” National Covid-19 Task Force spokesman Achmad Yurianto said in a daily briefing through video conference.
He said probable cases in hospitals rose by 627 to 30,317 while the number of persons under surveillance -- those with mild symptoms but have yet to take Covid-19 testing for some reasons -- also jumped by 1,843 to 248,690.
The outbreak has now affected 373 of the country's 514 districts and cities.
Achmad reiterated the call to wear face masks amid concerns that new cases outside Greater Jakarta have been growing at a faster speed. On Saturday, East Java reported 135 new cases, compared to additional 101 cases in Jakarta, the epicenter of the Indonesian outbreak.
"Many asymptomatic persons don’t realize that they have Covid-19 and that’s why it’s very important for all people to wear masks," he said.
"There is a 70 percent probability for asymptomatic persons to spread the virus if they don’t wear masks, but it will be reduced to 5 percent if they wear masks," Achmad said.
