Jakarta. Indonesia reported 700 new confirmed cases of coronavirus on Sunday to bring the country’s total to 26,473 and conclude the toughest month since the country’s outbreak began in early March.
Southeast Asia’s biggest country recorded 16,352 confirmed cases during the month, or 61.77 percent of the overall cases.
When Jakarta, the hardest hit by the outbreak, was past its peak in mid-May, East Java emerged as the new epicenter and continued to report the most daily cases during the most of the period since.
East Java has 224 new cases on Sunday, while Jakarta reported 118 cases.
“But please note that cases in Jakarta aren’t entirely Jakarta residents, as migrant workers returning via the Soekarno Hatta Airport were included in the city’s statistics when they tested positive for the virus,” National Covid-19 Task Force spokesman Achmad Yurianto said in a daily briefing in Jakarta.
The national tally includes 1,613 deaths, 40 more from yesterday, and 7,308 recovered patients.
South Sulawesi, South Sumatra and South Kalimantan have also become the new hotspots in the past week.
On Thursday, South Sulawesi outranked Central Java in the fourth place of most-affected provinces.
Jakarta remains on the top with 7,348 cases, followed by East Java (4,857), West Java (2,260), South Sulawesi (1,541), Central Java (1,403), South Sumatra (982) and South Kalimantan (919).
Since May 10, East Java has reported 1,197 more cases than Jakarta.
