Jakarta. Photo-sharing app Instagram claims it records more than 45 million active users every month in Indonesia and a user growth of more than 100 percent since last year, confirming the general suspicion that Indonesians are among the world's most active Instagrammers.

Instagram — acquired by Facebook in 2012 — said it has 700 million active users globally and Indonesia is one of its most exciting markets with an immense growth of users — from 22 million in early 2016 to 45 million as of July 2017.

"Indonesians are also the most active users of our 'Instagram story' feature, using it twice more frequently than the average user," Instagram said in a statement on Wednesday (26/07).

"Indonesia has the largest Instagram community in Asia Pacific. Sharing important moments in someone's life is obviously a popular activity here," said Sri Widowati, Facebook Indonesia's country director.

Indonesia also has one of the highest numbers of internet users in the world. In 2016, nearly 88 million of the country's 250 million plus were connected to the network.

According to statistics agency Statista, at least 76 million people in Indonesia access social media every month despite slow internet connection. The country's network has an average speed of 4.5 megabytes per second — six times less than in South Korea.

Facebook remains the most favored social media platform for Indonesians, who are also the biggest Facebook users in Southeast Asia.

A report in May also said Indonesia has the fifth-largest number of Twitter users in the world.
