Jakarta Police Find DNA Match in Murder of Kalideres School Girl
Jakarta. Police finally caught a break in their investigation into the murder of a nine-year-old school girl in West Jakarta, after DNA testing suggests the killer might be one of the witnesses officers had already interviewed.
The lifeless body of Putri Nur Fauziyah, who was raped before she was murdered, was found inside an empty cardboard box in the Kalideres area last week and police have since collected DNA samples from relatives and neighbors.
“There are 12 indicators in a DNA test and the sample extracted from Putri's body match that of one of the witnesses. It's a 99 percent match,” Jakarta Police general crimes director Sr. Comr. Krishna Murti said on Thursday, six day after the body was discovered.
Krishna said tests were carried out by Jakarta Police's forensics lab but investigators are considering to process the DNA samples at a different lab ̶̶ “to be sure” ̶̶ before the witness is named as a suspect in Putri's murder.
Krishna declined to reveal the witness's identity or how the witness is related to Putri.
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian earlier hinted that the killer might be someone close to Putri, highlighting the fact that Putri was last seen being picked up from school by two men on a motorcycle.
“I went to [Putri's] school and it is located in a crowded area. This means it is highly unlikely that the victim was kidnapped by force. Therefore, we have assumed that the victim left [with the two men] voluntarily because she knew them,” Tito said on Wednesday.
