Jakarta. The Jakarta administration will officially implementĀ the odd-even license plate scheme on Aug. 30, after the last trial on Friday (26/08) indicated that the system is effective and that it would ease traffic congestion during peak hours.

The system allows cars to enter major roads in the city on alternate days based on their license plate numbers.

"Based on the evaluation, we may conclude that the trial has succeeded. The travel time is shorter, TransJakarta's frequency and the number of passengers are higher," Jakarta Transportation Office head Andri Yansyah said.

Average vehicle speeds increased by 20 percent during the trial, while residents who wanted to travel along certain routes had to opt for public transportation.

Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said many drivers and motorcyclist did not obey the rules during the trial period because there were no consequences.

"You won't be ticketed now, it will start on Aug. 30. It's is easy; you just check the vehicles at traffic lights," Ahok said.

Drivers who violate the rules will face up to two months in prison orĀ a fine of Rp 500,000 ($38).

The odd-even system is a temporary solution in anticipation of the future implementation of electronic road pricing, which will require drivers to pay to enter main streets, such as Jalan Jend. Sudirman, Jalan M.H. Thamrin and Jalan Gatot Subroto.
