Jokowi Cheers Indonesia U-23's AFC Semifinal Entry, Eyes Paris 2024 Olympics

Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo expressed his pride in Indonesia U-23's victory over South Korea in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup quarterfinals in Qatar.

"This is the first time Indonesia has reached the semifinals in this competition, truly historic," President Jokowi wrote on his X account.

He encouraged the team to seize the opportunity to advance to the Paris 2024 Olympics, saying, "Congratulations to the Young Garuda national team! Hopefully, Indonesia can secure a ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympics. Keep up the spirit, Indonesian national team,"

In the quarterfinal match at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Indonesia U-23 defeated South Korea in a penalty shootout, winning 11-10 after the match ended 2-2 in regular time.

Following their victory, Indonesia will face the winner between Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia. The match is scheduled for Friday at 09.00 p.m. Jakarta time.

If Indonesia reaches the final, they will secure a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The AFC U-23 Asian Cup also serves as the AFC qualification tournament for the Paris Olympics. The top three teams, including the finalists and the winner of the third-place play-off, will earn a spot in the Olympics. Meanwhile, the fourth-placed team will face Guinea in an intercontinental play-off.
