Jokowi Inspects Security, Defense Developments in Natuna Islands
Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inspected the construction of defense facilities during a visit to the Natuna Islands, Riau Province, on Thursday (06/10).
Jokowi said that in addition to his government's strong focus on the economy, he is also committed to strengthening defense and security in Indonesia's furthermost islands.
"Aside from the current construction there will be six bases intended for the Air Force, Navy and Army," he said.
The waters around Natuna Islands are acknowledged by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as Indonesian territory, providing the country with an authority to maintain and safeguard the sovereignty of the area.
Jokowi and his entourage returned to Jakarta after inspecting the military facility construction, departing from Ranai Airport, Natuna, Riau, on Thursday afternoon.
