Jokowi Orders Delay in Civil Servant Relocation to New Capital

Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has ordered the postponement of the planned relocation of central government employees to the still-developing new capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan. The delay is to ensure that essential infrastructure is completed beforehand, an aide said on Tuesday.
"The relocation of civil servants to Nusantara was originally scheduled for this month, and several apartments are already available. However, the president has requested that we wait until office buildings and the necessary digital infrastructure are fully completed," Administrative and Bureaucratic Reforms Minister Abdullah Azwar Anas said after a meeting with the president at the State Palace in Jakarta.
Azwar said the relocation is not just about physically moving government offices but also integrating digital transformation into the process. "The president wants to ensure that the digital infrastructure in Nusantara is fully operational before employees are relocated," he added.
The first wave of relocations, which was expected to begin in September or October, has been postponed until further notice at Jokowi's request, Azwar said.
He noted that while 1,700 state employees were expected to be part of the initial relocation, only 14 of the 47 planned apartment buildings have been completed so far. The remaining apartments are projected to be finished by the end of the year.
The government is also preparing financial incentives to support civil servants making the move to Nusantara, Azwar said.
