Jokowi to Hash Out Infrastructure Development With Asean Leaders at Bangkok Summit

NOVEMBER 01, 2019

Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said he will urge his counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or Asean, to collaborate in infrastructure development within the Indo-Pacific Concept framework during the 35th Asean Summit in Bangkok on Saturday.

"I will call on all the Asean member countries to work together in infrastructure development according to the Indo-Pacific Concept," the president said.

Asean leaders approved the Indo-Pacific Cooperation Concept this June in Bangkok. The concept was initiated by Indonesia.

Jokowi said the framework has been made necessary by unexpected trends in the global economy.

The president also said better connectivity among Asean member states would make the regional economy more competitive.

"We hope better connectivity will increase the competitiveness of products made by Asean member countries," Jokowi said in Jakarta on Friday.

The president will also hold bilateral meetings with the heads of state of New Zealand, Japan, Australia and India and Asean leaders' meetings with the regional group's partners, including China and India.
