Jokowi's Son Runs for Solo Mayor With Blessing From Mother

DECEMBER 12, 2019

Solo. Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the eldest son of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, departed to the Central Java capital of Semarang on Thursday to register his candidacy for the mayoral election in Solo, with backing from the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, or PDI-P.

Gibran told around 1,000 of his supporters in Solo that if elected, he would lead Solo in "a great leap forward."

"We gather here not just to see me off to Semarang. We are bound by a shared dream of taking a great leap forward for Solo," Gibran said in the courtyard of the Graha Sabha building in the center of town.

Gibran was flanked by his mother Iriana Widodo and his wife Selvi Ananda as he made the statement.

"We are not talking about changes, we are talking about making a leap to prosperity for the people of Solo," Gibran said.

The president's hometown, known as a center of Javanese culture with its Surakarta Sunanate, is located around 530 kilometers east of Jakarta.

Gibran's supporters packed into 20 buses to accompany him to the PDI-P provincial office in Semarang.

Iriana said she had given Gibran her blessing.

"We performed the dawn prayer together and Gibran asked me for my blessing. I hope things go smoothly for him," Iriana said.
