Jakarta. The son and son-in-law of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo won mayoral elections in their respective city on Wednesday, according to quick count results by credible research agencies.

Gibran Rakabuming Raka, 33, followed the step of his father by winning the mayoral race in the family’s hometown of Solo, Central Java, in a landslide.

Backed by nearly all major political parties, Gibran received at least 87 percent of the votes after the count has reached more than 90 percent of total votes in the evening to beat independent candidate Bagyo Wahono.

The quick count was conducted by Charta Politika and Voxpol Center.

In Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, Bobby Nasution got 56 percent of the votes, leading by 11 percentage points over incumbent Akhyar Nasution.

The 29-year-old is married to Jokowi’s daughter Kahiyang Ayu.

The elections were the first for both businessmen who turned to politics late last year.

Formerly known as a food businessman specializing in traditional sweet pancakes or martabak, Gibran will write history as the first Indonesian president son to become a mayor.

Jokowi himself was a two-term mayor in the city, about 550 kilometers east of Jakarta. However, he didn’t complete his second term after winning the gubernatorial election in Jakarta in 2012.

Two years later, Jokowi left his job as governor after being elected president.
