KPK Arrests House Deputy Speaker Taufik Kurniawan for Bribery

NOVEMBER 04, 2018

Seminyak, Bali. The national antigraft agency arrested House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Taufik Kurniawan in Jakarta on Friday for alleged bribery involving the transfer of special funds from the state budget to a district government in Central Java.

"Taufik will spend his first 20 days in detention at the KPK offices in [Jalan] Rasuna Said, Kuningan, [South Jakarta]," Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) spokesman Febri Diansyah told reporters.

The agency secured a travel ban on Taufik before naming him a suspect on Tuesday last week.

The National Mandate Party (PAN) politician allegedly received Rp 3.65 billion ($244,000) as part of his 5 percent cut of a "commitment fee" from Kebumen district head Yahya Fuad for helping secure a transfer of Rp 73 billion to the district government from the Special Allocation Fund in the 2016 state budget.

Details of the case emerged in 2016 after KPK investigators caught businessmen and local officials red-handed in several hotels in Semarang, Central Java, and Yogyakarta.

The antigraft agency managed to gather enough evidence from the operation to build a case against Yahya and several other officials and businessmen, who were named suspects in February.

Taufik is the second House speaker implicated in corruption in the past 12 months. Former speaker Setya Novanto was sentenced to 15 years in prison in April for his role in corruption involving the procurement of electronic national identity cards or e-KTP.
