KPK Says It Will Closely Monitor Regional Elections

AUGUST 31, 2015

Jakarta. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has warned candidates and other stakeholders in the upcoming regional elections to steer clear from any illicit backroom dealing, as it will be keeping a close eye on all involved.

The KPK on Monday launched a special program to scrutinize the electoral process, under the banner 'Electoral Integrity 2015,' ahead of the nationwide Dec. 9 polls.

“We will arrest those who commit [illicit] transactions in connection to the regional elections,” KPK commissioner Adnan Pandu Praja said after the launch of the program at the agency's headquarters in South Jakarta.

Adnan asked members of the public to report any corrupt practices that they had knowledge of in relation to the election of governors, mayors and district heads.

“We'll stay alert. That's why we hope the public will pass on to us accurate information,” Adnan said.

He added that the KPK had extended the same call to other election stakeholders, including the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu).

“The KPK hopes to arrest none of the elected regional heads [after the polls],” Adnan said. "We hope that those who will be elected are supporting the fight to eradicate corruption."
