KPK Waits to Hand Over Setya Novanto to State Prosecutors
Jakarta. Indonesia's antigraft investigators said they had finished interrogating House of Representatives speaker and main e-KTP graft suspect Setya Novanto on Wednesday (29/11).
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will now interview defense witnesses before handing over the case to state prosecutors, KPK commissioner Basaria Panjaitan said as reported by Suara Pembaruan.
Setya, also the chairman of the Golkar Party, had asked three witnesses to give testimonies on his behalf: Golkar secretary general Idrus Maham, Golkar East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) chairman Melky Lena and party treasurer Robert Kardinal.
Setya is accused of embezzling Rp 574 billion ($42 million) from the Rp 5.9 trillion e-KTP project, in which the state reportedly lost a total of Rp 2.3 trillion.
The senior politician has also requested a pretrial conference that will begin at the South Jakarta district court on Thursday, Nov. 30.
Setya was named a suspect in the case in July but was acquitted of all charges in an earlier pretrial conference.
The House of Representatives' Ethics Council (MKD) will question Setya on Thursday morning at KPK's office, commission spokesman Febri Diansyah said.
The council will have to rule on whether or not Setya had also violated the House's code of ethics.
