Labor Activist, Former Minister Jacob Nuwa Wea Dies
Jakarta. Jacob Nuwa Wea, a former Indonesian minister of manpower and transmigration, has passed away at the Gleaneagles Hospital in Penang, Malaysia, on Saturday (09/04) after a long struggle to recover from a stroke, a family spokesman said. Jacob was 71.
Born in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, on April 14, 1944, Jacob became involved in labor activism after completing his studies in 1978. He became a lawmaker for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) in the House of Representatives in 1999, before serving as a minister in the cabinet of former President Megawati Soekarnoputri from 2001 to 2004.
Jacob also served as chairman of the All-Indonesian Workers' Union Confederation (KSPSI) and chairman of the Jakarta branch of the PDI-P.
His body is scheduled to arrive in Jakarta on Sunday, the family spokesman said.
Jacob is survived by four sons and six grandchildren.
