Large-Scale Social Restriction to Start for 6m Tangerang Residents on Saturday

APRIL 14, 2020

Tangerang, Banten. Three of Jakarta's satellite cities in the neighboring province of Banten have agreed to start imposing large-scale social restriction next Saturday, putting more than six million people under stricter epidemic containment measures that will severely limit their mobility.

Tangerang City, Tangerang District and South Tangerang District will be the last regions in the Greater Jakarta area to impose the restriction, also known as PSBB.

Jakarta had begun the restriction on Friday, while West Java's Bogor, Depok and Bekasi would start it on Wednesday.

"We will use the next four days to inform people about the PSBB," Tangerang City Mayor Arief R. Wismansyah said on Monday.

The city and the districts are also working on a regulation to detail the restrictions in the area.

"We will work on the regulation. We will report to the Banten governor and the central government to make sure it's integrated with other regions including Jakarta," Arief said.

Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto approved Banten's proposal to implement the large-scale social restriction on Sunday, citing the severity of the pandemic in its cities and districts close to Jakarta.

"The PSBB needs to be implemented in Banten considering the increasing number of cases and the spread of the outbreak in the province," Terawan said earlier.

Banten now has the third-largest number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia after Jakarta and West Java.

The latest data from the Health Ministry, released on Monday, showed the province had 285 confirmed Covid-19 cases with 22 deaths and only seven recoveries.
