JANUARY 03, 2017

Jakarta. The fourth session of Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama's blasphemy trial on Tuesday (03/01) will see six witnesses testify after reporting the governor's October campaign speech in which he allegedly insulted Islam at Jakarta's Kepulauan Seribu.

The hearing session started at 9.20 a.m. in the auditorium of the Agriculture Ministry on Jalan Harsono in South Jakarta. The hearing is open to the public, but media have been prohibited from broadcasting live.

Prosecutor Ali Murkatono said the witnesses to be featured at the hearing are Novel Chaidir Hasan, Gus Joy Setiawan, M. Burhanuddin, Muchsin alias Habib Muchsin, Syamsu Hilal and Nandi Naksabandi.

They will testify as plaintiffs after filing blasphemy reports against the governor.

Basuki, a Christian of Chinese descent, was declared a suspect in a blasphemy investigation in mid-November amid mounting pressure from Muslim hardliners who had staged a series of large-scale demonstrations against him over the past two months.

Last week's hearing saw the judges panel turn down Basuki's note of objection and call to strike down the case, which his lawyers claimed breached procedures.
