Lawmaker Calls for 'Extraordinary Measures' in Response to Solo Terror Attack

JULY 05, 2016

Jakarta. House of Representatives Commission III chairman Bambang Soesatyo has called on all security personnel in the country to raise their levels of alertness and preparedness in preventing or responding to acts of terror, following the suicide bombing in Solo, Central Java, on Tuesday morning (05/07).

Bambang said the brutality of the terrorist attack was intolerable, as it took place just hours before a public religious celebration.

One officer was injured when a suspected terrorist detonated a low-explosive device strapped to his body after he was prevented from entering a police station in Solo at 7.30 a.m. on Tuesday. The attacker was killed instantly.

"The Solo bombing was indeed shocking, as it happened amid Indonesia's rising concern over similar acts of terror in Saudi Arabia," Bambang said in Jakarta.

The Golkar Party lawmaker described the bombings, both inside Indonesia and abroad, as extremely brutal because of the way the terrorists attacked random places during the fasting month of Ramadan.

"Even in Solo and the three cities in Saudi Arabia, the terrorists did not care that within hours, Muslims globally will celebrate Idul Fitri," Bambang said.

The lawmaker said the state should employ extraordinary antiterrorist policies and measures to respond to the brutality of the attack and that no tolerance should be shown to any person or group involved in acts of terrorism.

"The state should not be minimalist when its people are threatened by terrorists. On the contrary, its actions should be extra firm and direct against any groups implicated in planned attacks," Bambang said.

He went on to call for additional powers to be given to the National Police, Indonesian Military (TNI), State Intelligence Agency (BIN) and National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) in accordance with the current threat level.

"In order to help identify and monitor the movements of terrorists between various countries, Commission III has also advised the government to increase cooperation with several nations," Bambang said.
