Leaders of 40 Nations, 3 Global Organizations Congratulate Jokowi on Re-Election
Jakarta. Forty foreign leaders and the heads of three international organizations have congratulated President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on his re-election, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said on Monday.
Jokowi's second term will start on Oct. 20.
"Several foreign leaders have congratulated the president since the announcement of the official result. As of today, at this second, [the leaders of] 40 countries, plus three international organizations, have congratulated [him]," Retno said.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) announced official result of last month's presidential and legislative elections on May 21, with Jokowi and his running mate Ma'ruf Amin having secured 55.5 percent of the vote. However, rival candidate pair Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga Uno have rejected the result, claiming widespread cheating. Their supporters held a rally in Jakarta last week, which turned violent, claiming the lives of several protestors.
The opposition camp filed a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court on Friday night, challenging the election result.
Among the foreign leaders who have congratulated Jokowi are those of Singapore, Malaysia, India, Australia and the United States.
Retno said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and East Timorese President Francisco Guterres recently also sent their congratulations.
The leaders also congratulated Indonesia on successfully staging its first simultaneous presidential and legislative elections.
