Man Arrested for Carrying Sharp Weapon Outside C. Java Police Headquarters
Jakarta. Officers arrested a man allegedly carrying a sharp weapon in a backpack in front of the Central Java Police headquarters in the provincial capital Semarang on Tuesday morning (27/06).
Central Java Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Djarod Padakova confirmed the arrest.
"He was arrested after repeatedly passing the Central Java Police headquarters. Members of the National Police's Mobile Brigade [Brimob] then searched him," Djarod said on Tuesday, as quoted by state-run news agency Antara.
He said the suspect claimed that he was only looking for a place to buy food in the area, but on closer inspection, the sharp object was discovered in his backpack.
Djarod said the suspect was also seen flipping through cardboard nearby. However, the spokesman did not give further detail on the suspect's identity.
The 1957 Emergency Law allows police to act against anyone found in possession of sharp weapons.
In a separate incident, Adjutant First Insp. Martua Sigalingging was stabbed to death while resting inside a checkpoint in front of the police headquarters in Medan, North Sumatra, early on Sunday morning.
"The two perpetrators climbed over the fence and then attacked the police officer [...] at the entrance to the North Sumatra Police headquarters," National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto said in Jakarta on Sunday.
The two attackers, Syawaluddin Pakpahan and Ardial Ramadan, are suspected to be part of the Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) terror network, believed to be run by militant Bahrun Naim, who is currently in Syria.
