Lombok. The world-class Mandalika Circuit has become a regular feature in the MotoGP calendar, positioning Indonesia as a key player in the global sports tourism industry.

Initiated by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo as part of his administration’s drive for nationwide infrastructure development, the Mandalika Circuit reflects his vision for equitable economic growth, particularly focusing on regions beyond Java.

Located on the resort island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, the circuit has significantly boosted international tourism, establishing itself as a major destination alongside the iconic Bali.

“The Mandalika Circuit not only contributes to infrastructure development in West Nusa Tenggara, but also provides a major boost to the local economy and tourism sector,” said Troy Waroka, chairman of the 2024 Indonesia MotoGP.

Over the past decade under Jokowi, Indonesia has witnessed remarkable progress in infrastructure development across provinces, including remote regions and national border areas, according to Troy.

“Mandalika is the first sports tourism destination in Indonesia to achieve global recognition,” he added.

Crucially, the circuit has emerged as a key driver of economic growth for surrounding communities, benefiting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the area.

In addition to hosting MotoGP, the Mandalika Circuit has been home to the World Superbike Championship for two seasons.

Local talent has been recruited and trained to international standards as race marshals and tourist guides, further enhancing the region’s competitiveness in tourism and hospitality.

“The training programs have significantly improved the skillset of local workers, making them more competitive in the global tourism and hospitality sectors,” Troy said. “We extend our deepest appreciation to President Joko Widodo for his unwavering commitment to developing the Mandalika Circuit, a monumental legacy for the Indonesian people.”
