Jakarta. Megawati Sukarnoputri, chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, or PDI-P, will campaign for incumbent Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat for Jakarta's Gubernatorial Election next month, a party official said in Jakarta on Wednesday (18/01).
Andreas Hugo Pareira, head of the PDI-P's central leadership board, said Megawati will take on an active role in the campaign by attending campaign events to help Ahok and Djarot succeed.
“We are working on the campaign schedule which Megawati will attend,” Andreas said.
“In previous local elections, Megawati attended [campaigns] and visited several provinces with journalists. In most of the local elections, if she had time, Megawati would participate in the campaign process,” Andreas added.
He said Megawati's participation in the campaign aims to promote the candidates further and validate their candidacy. This is because many voters were left doubting the party's commitment to their campaign amid widespread uncertainty over the governor's fate involving allegations of blasphemy.
“Since the beginning, Megawati has fully supported Ahok and Djarot,” Andreas said putting all rumors to rest, adding that the chairwoman feels that she has the responsibility to campaign for any candidates supported by the party.
