Narcotics Agency Chief Budi Waseso Not Looking for Top Cop Nomination
Jakarta. Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso, chief of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), said on Thursday (09/06) he is not expecting to be nominated to replace current National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti who will enter retirement next month.
Budi, along with National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan and National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) chief Tito Karnavian, are rumored to be the strongest candidates to replace top cop Badrodin.
A shortlist of candidates to be the next National Police chief from the National Police Commission has been delivered to the State Palace, but on Tuesday President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said he had not received it.
Budi said his sole focus at the moment is developing and improving the BNN.
“It's not a matter of whether or not I am ready to take the position. A police officer is a servant to the state, he has to be ready for any sort of appointment. A servant should not seek, let alone demand, such position,” Budi said.
According to the law, all National Police chief hopefuls must go through a series of fit and proper tests at the House before the selected candidate is sworn in by the president.
Jokowi now has less than a month and a half to propose his preferred candidates to the House.
