NASA, Freelancer.com Ask Indonesians to Join Global Robotic Competition
Jakarta. Freelancer.com, an online platform for job-seeking freelancers, and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration are inviting Indonesian designers to join a global robotic competition, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
NASA's Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation has partnered with Freelancer.com since last year in welcoming people from all over the world to help solve complex problems faced by the agency's space mission.
This year, they are opening recruitment for designers all over the world to have a go at designing a concept for a robotic arm that will be part of a NASA's next generation free-flying robots, the Astrobee, the statement said.
"Several Indonesian users participated in some previous NASA contests on Freelancer," said Helma Kusuma, country manager for Freelancer.com in Indonesia.
"We are also expecting more Indonesians to take part in this competition as this opportunity from NASA can be a way to show the skills of our many Indonesian professionals to the world."
Indonesians designers and engineers have overcome global challenges before, including M. Arie Kurniawan, an engineer from Salatiga, Central Java, who won a global 3D printing challenge by General Electrics and the open engineering community GrabCAD in 2013, beating Swedish and French engineers.
NASA's robot, which will a sequel to the SPHERES autonomous free-flying robot that's currently being used on board the International Space Station, will have the capability to move around inside the space station on its own without interfacing or interfering with the station.
It is expected to perform a number of routine, repetitive or simple tasks for a long period of time, such as surveys and inspections, or be used as a mobile camera, according to the statement.
