New UN Resident Coordinator Says Work Will Focus on Building Partnerships, Engaging Youth
Jakarta. Anita Nirody, the new United Nations resident coordinator in Indonesia, said her work will focus on fostering closer partnerships with Indonesia to realize the country's potential to meet the Sustainable Development Goals framework and to engage with youth to boost national development.
Tasked with assisting Indonesian national development, Nirody said the UN will utilize its role as a global entity to seek a wide breadth of advice and development strategies.
The organization will seek "policy advice and technical expertise from various parts of the world to contribute to Indonesia's development," Nirody said.
Under the 2016-2020 United Nations Partnership for Development Framework (UNPDF), the Indonesian government and the UN aim to strengthen cooperation on key priority issues, including poverty reduction, environmental sustainability and improved governance.
Globally, the UN works within the context of the SDGs, which encompasses a total of 17 goals and 169 indicators on issues of economic, social, and environmental dimensions.
The UN-Indonesia partnership focus, according to Nirody, will cover a broad range that includes economic growth and productivity, reducing poverty, good governance, preserving biodiversity and the provision of social services across the country.
Nirody also spoke of young people's crucial role in implementing the SDGs, which is in line with Indonesia’s own Medium-Term Development Framework.
"It is going to be very important that [young people] be an intrinsic part of that effort," Nirody said, adding that youth as innovators in development solutions "cannot be underestimated."
