No Education Subsidy for Rioters, Ahok Tells Jakmania

JUNE 28, 2016

Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama told members of Persija Jakarta's fans club Jakmania that he will cancel their Jakarta Smart Cards (KJP) if they incite another football riot.

"I've told them that if they get involved [in another riot], I will revoke their KJP," Ahok said at the City Hall on Tuesday (28/06).

Students on KJP are entitled to a yearly subsidy of Rp 18 million ($1,400) if they are accepted at state universities.

Ahok said the Jakarta administration is studying the family background of students who had been involved in football riots with Jakmania. "We want to know if their parents have been neglecting them, or if they no longer have any parent to take care of them," Ahok said.

Ahok's comment came after Jakmania fans started out a riot during a Torabika Soccer Championship match between Persija Jakarta and Sriwijaya at the Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta last Friday (24/06).

Reports say a street seller died and a policeman suffered serious injuries during the incident.
