Jakarta. The General Election Commission, or KPU, said on Tuesday (12/07) it will elect a new definitive chair of national election organizers next week.

KPU commissioner Hadar Nafis Gumay told reporters the commission will hold a plenary meeting to elect new chair next week.

The new definitive chair will replace Husni Kamil Manik, who died from acute infection at a hospital in South Jakarta last week.

"The KPU doesn't need a definitive chair in hurry. A KPU chair is urgently required to sign off the KPU regulations, which will not be finished within this week. The other tasks can be done by commissioners," Hadar said at the KPU office in Jakarta, on Tuesday.

KPU is now working to finish the deliberation of 10 regulations on simultaneous regional election.

Hadar said KPU will also send a letter to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo next Friday to formally inform the president of the unexpeced death of the chairman and the need to fill his role.

A new commissioner will be proposed by the president, based on the results of 14 commissioner candidate fit and proper tests conducted in 2012.

The results place election activist Hasyim Asyari as the top candidate to join the chair, as long as he passes a health exam is not a member of a political party.

The commission will in the meantime be led by an acting chairperson, who will be elected in a Plenary session on Tuesday.

In the previous three years, including under the leadership of Husni, KPU commissioners have drawn on so-called collective collegial decisions made by consensus.
