North Central Timor Cross-Border Road Race May Become Annual Event
Jakarta. The successful hosting of the Cross-Border Road Race in North Central Timor district, East Nusa Tenggara, last weekend has prompted the organizers to explore the possibility of turning it into an annual event, district head Raymundus Sau Fernandes said.
The race involved 100 bikers in 17 teams competing in three categories.
The North Central Timor Regent's Cup was won by Jimmy Halla of the RBRT 76 Dirga Motor Soe racing team, while Jems Buan Cendana of Cendana AMP Speed Huruk Mulas won the East Nusa Tenggara Police Chief's Cup. The North Central Timor Police Chief's Cup was won by Cendana's teammate Rhyo Sonbay.
The event coincided with entertainment options including live music, dancing and a modern free-style performance.
"I'm glad that North Central Timor hosted the race; it's good for the economy as well as encouraging teenagers to avoid illegal racing, which is very dangerous," Fernandes said in a statement on Sunday (23/07).
"We'll make it an annual event," he added.
The motorcycle race got its name from the fact that the district borders East Timor. Some of the racers were also from the former Indonesian province, which gained its independence in September 1999.
"We like to hold events to attract people from our neighboring country, because basically, we have the same interests. Other events like grass-track [another motorcycle race type] and horseracing are some shared favorites," Fernandes said.
"Besides, we'll also improve other tourism sites," he added.
