Jakarta. A team of doctors in Singapore will conduct comprehensive eye surgery on Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, senior investigator Novel Baswedan this weekend, a spokesman said on Tuesday (16/05).

Novel has been suffering from severe injuries to his face and eyes after unknown assailants threw acid on him outside his home in Kelapa Gading, Jakarta, on April 11.

Doctors have finally decided to go ahead with the surgery after cornea membranes in both of Novel's eyes have failed to show significant signs of improvement.

KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah said parts of Novel’s right cornea have grown inflamed, while blood veins in the investigator's left eye have failed to heal.

"Doctors spoke of the disrupted growth of [Novel’s] blood veins in his left eye. So, we will take note of all updates and brace for this weekend's surgery," Febri said.

Meanwhile, KPK investigators are still working to uncover the identities Novel's assailants after recently releasing three individuals previously suspected of being involved in the attack.

"I think we will still discuss internally on what we can do to revitalize and strengthen the [investigation] process. It is our job," Febri said in South Jakarta on Monday.

"The president ordered the National Police chief to strengthen our team and assist us in the investigation. I am confident that Novel and his family appreciate the seriousness of our undertaking," he added.

The agency has intensified coordination with police in recent weeks as they work to resolve the case.

KPK has said it would support any special investigation unit President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo might establish in coming weeks to assist in the case.

"If the president decides to establish an independent team, or a special team, or a presidential team, we will be open in working alongside them to get to the bottom of this tragic incident," Febri said.
