Oesman Sapta Odang Elected as New Hanura Party Chairman

DECEMBER 22, 2016

Jakarta. Oesman Sapta Odang, the Regional Representative Council, or DPD, deputy speaker has been unanimously elected as the new chairman of the People's Conscience Party, or Hanura, on Wednesday (21/22), replacing Wiranto who resigned from the post after being appointed as chief security minister.

Wiranto had been looking for his successor since President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo appointed him as minister in the second cabinet reshuffle in July.

The president does not allow any of his cabinet member to hold a strategic position in a political party to avoid conflicts of interest.

Oesman, also the chairman of the Indonesian Farmers Association (HKTI), was declared as Hanura's new chairman during the party's 10th anniversary celebration in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Wednesday.

"After a series of meetings, party officials elected Oso [Oesman's nickname] to replace me as the chairman of Hanura," Wiranto said in a press conference.

Oesman was the lone candidate for the post, though several other party figures had been rumored to be interested in filling Wiranto's shoes, including former administrative and bureaucratic reform minister Yuddy Chrisnandi, former industry minister Saleh Husin, former lawmaker Nurdin Tampubolon and former military chief Moeldoko.

Wiranto said Oesman has already signed the party's integrity pact which obligates the new Hanura chairman to support President Jokowi's administration and his re-election campaign in 2019.
