Perindo to Support Anies-Sandiaga
Jakarta. The Indonesian Unity Party, or Perindo, has declared its support for Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno in the runoff of the Jakarta gubernatorial election on April 19.
Perindo chairman Hary Tanoesoedibjo expressed his hope for Anies-Sandiaga to win against the incumbent pair, Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and Djarot Saiful Hidayat.
"The gubernatorial election in Jakarta this time is more controversial than elsewhere. Our decision was based on the mission of Perindo. Indonesia must step forward and become prosperous," he said in a press release on Tuesday (14/03).
Hary, who is also the chief executive of MNC Group, said the future leaders of Jakarta should promote diversity.
He encouraged all of his party members to support Anies and Sandiaga.
Anies appreciated the support and said he is optimistic about its impact on winning the race.
During Tuesdays's endorsement ceremony in attendance were Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party chairman Prabowo Subianto, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) chairman Sohibul Iman.
Gerindra and PKS have been supporting Anies-Sandiaga since the first round of the election on Feb. 15.
Jakarta has to elect its new governor in a runoff election after none of the nominees managed to win an outright majority in the first round.
Anies won 39.9 percent of the vote, while Ahok, who is backed by the pro-government Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), won 42.9 percent. Agus Harimurti, son of former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, got only 17 percent.
