Jakarta. The National Police on Tuesday (07/08) said they are building a special prison for terrorists in Cikeas, Bogor, West Java.

Until now terrorism convicts have been kept at the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) headquarters in Depok, near Jakarta, and at regular detention facilities.

"[For the time being], terrorism convicts are in district prisons ... We have instructed them to place [the convicts] in separate cells, with more security, while we are waiting for the Cikeas prison to be ready," National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said, as quoted by BeritaSatu.com.

The detention center in Cikeas will be able to accommodate 340 prisoners, Tito added. Its construction is set to begin this month, and should be complete by the end of the year.

In May, a riot broke out at the Brimob prison, claiming the lives of five police. Since then the detention center has been seen as inadequate for terrorism convicts.

Law enforcers have been stepping up efforts to combat homegrown militancy, especially after a series of deadly attacks in East Java, also in May.

Tito said 283 suspected terrorists have been arrested in the past two months.
