Police Detain Individual Connected to Acid Attack on Novel Baswedan

MAY 11, 2017

Jakarta. Police detained an individual on Wednesday (10/05) they believe might be connected with the April 11 attack on Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, senior investigator Novel Baswedan, National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto said in Jakarta.

Investigators are currently questioning the detained individual at police headquarters in Jakarta.

"Several days ago, members with the National and Jakarta Police criminal investigation unit traveled to Singapore to meet with Novel. There, they acquired information on the alleged individual, whose initials are A.L.," Setyo said.

However, police have not yet brought formal charges against A.L. in connection with the attack on Novel.

"We are still investigating, we have to verify his alibi," he added.

Investigators acquired photographs from Novel before bringing A.L. in for questioning. However, it is unclear how Novel was in possession of A.L.'s photo, or why the KPK senior investigator is only coming forward with such information now.

Nevertheless, Novel believes that A.L. was only one of numerous attackers.

Police are continuing to coordinate with the KPK and Novel’s family to determine the assailants' identities.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono confirmed that investigators are still questioning A.L. to determine if he was involved in the incident.

"We are currently checking [A.L.'s] cellphones, and trying to verify his whereabouts during the time of the incident," Argo said.

On April 26, police detained two individuals believed to possess valuable information regarding the acid attack on Novel.

The investigator suffered serious burns to his face after an unknown assailant, or assailants, threw acid on him near his home in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, last month.
