Jakarta. Police are investigating allegations that unknown groups are preventing incumbent Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat from campaigning in parts of the capital.

"Several actions against the candidates during their campaign are being investigated," Jakarta Police deputy chief Brig. Gen. Suntana said in Jakarta on Wednesday (16/11).

He added that the police would enforce the law if they find any evidence of criminal activity.

"We are in the stage of investigating residents to establish whether they are from those areas. Surely, the police do not want to be reckless. Whoever is conducting [criminal acts] would be processed in accordance with the law," Suntasa said.

He said he was not aware of any cases where parties had been paying members of these groups to obstruct political campaigning, but that the investigation is continuing.

"It would be developed within the investigation. If evidence is found, the courts will issue a legal verdict," Suntasa said.
