Police Release Identity of Anti-Terror Personnel Who Stalked Top Prosecutor

Jakarta. The National Police released the identity of a low-ranking member of the counterterrorism squad Detachment 88 on Thursday, who was recently arrested for allegedly spying on a top prosecutor. However, the individual has been released without charges.
The person identified is Iqbal Mustofa, a 2nd Brigadier -- the lowest rank in the regular police hierarchy. He was arrested by members of the security detail guarding Febrie Adriansyah, the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes, during the incident last Sunday.
Febrie is currently leading investigations into several high-profile corruption cases, including one involving the state-owned tin miner Timah, with an estimated state loss of $18.5 billion.
National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Sandi Nugroho stated that Iqbal wasn’t charged with any crime and mentioned that both the Attorney General’s Office and the police have agreed to treat the matter as a closed issue.
“It’s true that our service member was arrested and handed over to the Paminal (Internal Security Bureau of the National Police),” Sandi said. “Our investigation found no criminal, ethics, or disciplinary breach by him.”
The spokesman declined to reveal the motive behind the alleged stalking, which caused an uproar at the AGO and prompted the president to summon the attorney general and the National Police chief for clarification.
On May 19, Febrie was reportedly stalked by at least two men while having dinner at a French restaurant in Cipete, South Jakarta. One of the suspected stalkers was arrested by Military Police personnel who were part of the prosecutor’s security detail.
“I can confirm that the stalking incident wasn’t a rumor; it did happen,” AGO spokesman Ketut Sumedana said in a news conference on Wednesday.
Prosecutors have retrieved data from the stalker’s cellphone.
“Our preliminary investigation found personal information and photos of the Deputy Attorney General on his cellphone,” Ketut said.
