Police Say Tanah Abang Blast Caused by Homemade Explosive
Jakarta. National Police have confirmed a blast that injured four people in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday was caused by a homemade explosive.
"It was the kind of firecracker people would toss and it was big, we are still investigating how it exploded," National Police spokesman Sr. Cmr. Rikwanto said.
Rikwanto said a joint team from the Jakarta Police, the National Police's anti-terror squad, Densus 88, and bomb disposal unit Gegana, have been deployed to the scene near the Block G of Tanah Abang market to investigate the explosion.
"For now we believe all four victims are not the ones who made the bomb," he said, adding police believed the explosive was placed at the scene "not too long ago."
Rikwanto said nails and screws, which were typically used in homemade bombs made by radical group in West and East Java, have been found at the scene.
"Whoever made the bomb obviously had bad intentions," he said.
Police are looking through old files to learn more about the bomb's signature to find out who the perpetrator might be, Rikwanto said.
Four people were injured in the explosion and are being treated in hospital.
There is no evidence of any terrorist link at this time.
